CO₂ Laser Recovery: What to Expect Day by Day
The question we hear most often about CO₂ laser resurfacing is not about results. It is about recovery. How red will I be? When can I wear makeup? When can I go back to work? Fair questions, because with CO₂, the recovery is not an inconvenient side effect of the treatment. It is the treatment. The controlled healing process is exactly what rebuilds collagen and reveals smoother, firmer skin.
Knowing what each day looks like turns an intimidating unknown into a plan. Here is an honest walkthrough of what recovery typically involves at each treatment level we offer on the DEKA Helix at Glo Rituals.
First: Your Downtime Depends on Your Treatment Level
CO₂ recovery is not one-size-fits-all, because CO₂ treatment is not one-size-fits-all. As a general guide for the three levels described on our [CO₂ Laser Resurfacing page]:
CoolPeel: about one to two days of mild redness, similar to light sun exposure. Most patients return to normal activities immediately.
Moderate resurfacing: a few days of social downtime with redness, light swelling, and flaking as skin renews.
Deep resurfacing: roughly five to seven days of true recovery time, with the most dramatic renewal to match.
Social downtime of 1 week is still expected for all levels of treatment as your skin heals, “coffee ground” like skin texture appears and gradually sloughs off revealing a smoother appearance as the skin heals.
You will know your expected recovery window before you ever book a treatment. The timeline below describes a deeper resurfacing treatment; lighter treatments follow the same arc, just faster and milder.
Days 1 to 2: The Sunburn Phase
Immediately after treatment, skin feels warm and tight, much like a strong sunburn. Redness and swelling are normal and expected, often peaking on the second day. Your job in this phase is simple: keep the skin clean, moist, and protected, exactly as directed in the aftercare plan you leave our studio with. Cool compresses and sleeping with your head slightly elevated can ease swelling. No makeup, no active skincare ingredients, and no picking, no matter how tempting.
Days 3 to 5: The Renewal Phase
This is when the magic starts, though it will not look like magic yet. Treated skin darkens slightly and begins to form MENDs (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris), damaged surface makes way for new skin underneath. It can feel dry, rough, or itchy. Stay patient and stay moisturized. Let the healing happen on its own schedule; pulling flakes or scabs off early can disrupt healing and affect your result. Gentle cleansing and the recovery products we recommend will carry you through this stretch.
Days 6 to 10: The Reveal
Peeling wraps up and fresh, new skin emerges. It is normal for this new skin to look pink at first, and the pinkness fades over the following days to weeks depending on treatment depth. Most patients feel comfortable in public, with mineral makeup if desired, by the end of the first week after a deep treatment, and much sooner after lighter ones. This is also when you will catch the first glimpse of what everyone calls the CO₂ glow.
Weeks 2 to 12: The Collagen Phase
Here is the part most people do not realize: your results are still being built long after your skin looks healed. Collagen remodeling continues beneath the surface for months, which is why texture keeps refining and skin keeps firming at four weeks, eight weeks, and beyond. Full results typically develop over three to six months.
Aftercare Rules That Protect Your Investment
Sun protection is non-negotiable. Healing skin is vulnerable to pigmentation. Daily SPF and sun avoidance protect both your recovery and your long-term result.
Keep it simple. Gentle cleanser, the moisturizer and recovery products we recommend, and nothing else until cleared. Retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliants wait until your skin is ready.
Skip heat and sweat early on. Hard workouts, saunas, and hot yoga can aggravate healing skin in the first stretch of recovery.
Hands off. Do not pick, peel, or scrub. Your skin knows what it is doing.
Use your direct line. Every Glo Rituals patient leaves with detailed aftercare instructions and a way to reach us. If anything feels off, we want to hear from you.
Recovery Is Easier When It Is Planned For
The patients who breeze through CO₂ recovery are the ones who chose the right treatment level for their life, not just their skin. That match is exactly what your consultation is for.
